MARKETING WITH YouTube

Out of all the platforms that have been covered so far this is the one that I am most interested in when it comes to an academic perspective. I have used YouTube for years as both a viewer and a creator so being able to learn about YouTube has been very interesting and eye opening. This chapter does a great job of explaining the basics of YouTube marketing but also does a deep dive into the algorithm, analytics, and overall data analysis. YouTube being one of the older and most popular social media platforms makes marketing a bit different and more difficult due to the fact that most markets on YouTube are quite saturated. However it is not close to impossible, it just might take more work and research to get the results you want.

No matter the market you are trying to break into it comes down to video quality and retention rate. The longer people watch your videos the more it will get recommended to new people which in turn will grow your audience. The algorithm revolves around watch time and retention rate not necessarily overall views and likes which is an important detail to understand when it comes to marketing and growing your audience on YouTube.

Just like most social media platforms consistency is also an important piece to this puzzle as well. Developing a schedule that your audience can get used to can develop a deeper trust between you and your audience. This can also help new audience members get a better understanding of when you post new content and what they can look forward to.

At the end of the day, if you focus on your consistency and retention rate then you will find success on this platform. Lastly, patience is key when it comes to getting discovered on YouTube. Take time to learn the algorithm and learn from your peers within your market. Being able to understand others' mistakes and successes will enhance the speed in which you see positive results.

  1. Good information, Ryan. I found the fact that the algorithm is centered around overall watch time and not views and likes. That is pretty surprising to me because many of the other platforms hammer hard on what you like and what they think you will like.
