THE HARSH TRUTH ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA

I recently created a short 5 minute podcast about some of the darker sides of social media when it comes to toxicity and negatively the link to the podcast is at the bottom of the post if you wish to listen.

The first thing I wanted to discuss was the overall misunderstanding of how much words hurt and even though those words are typed behind a screen they can still be very impactful. Although there have been some large content creators to speak about the issue such as Ludwig and Charlie there has been a big increase in negativity across the internet due to the new Mr.Beast Video where he helped pay for the treatment of blindness for 1,000 people. This seemed like an incredible act of kindness yet there was a massive outrage of negativity and toxicity surrounding the video and coming from all corners of the internet. This recent surge of behavior had me thinking about this problem as a whole and how it affects creators of all sizes.

Something I think that gets lost is the fact that all creators are human and they have emotions and feelings which can get lost in translation. Having open access to these creators has never been easier and this means hate and negativity can impact creators a lot more often and a lot easier. This idea trickles all the way down to small and medium size creators as well which could affect them so much that they quit on their dreams just to escape the toxicity.

At the end of the day I feel like this issue has been overlooked for too long and there isn't much being done about it from the platforms themselves. The longer this issue continues the worse the effects are going to be. I hope some true and permanent change is soon put in place so all creators and users feel safe and secure

  1. I couldn't agree with you more, Ryan. You made a great point about words being very impactful on social media. Etiquette is more important now than ever. Not doing or saying hurtful things is also of the utmost importance. I really don't ever think this problem will be solved.. it's just impossible unfortunately.

  2. I saw the outrage to the Mr Beast video and I was so confused. He just gave 1000 people free eye surgery and all the internet could do was complain and belittle him. People just don't think before they post, and almost always forget there is a human at the other end.

  3. I also saw the outrage on Mr. Beast, helping out individuals who needed eye surgery and I think that Its absurd that the internet bashes him for this. I think that what he did is huge int he sense of helping out others is a good thing in general.
